Indian artists discovered over 11.2 bn times by first-time listeners in 2024: Spotify report

In 2024, Spotify's 'Loud & Clear' report highlighted a significant milestone for Indian artists: they were discovered over 11.2 billion times by first-time listeners, marking a 13% increase from the previous year. This surge underscores the growing global appeal of India's diverse music scene.

Financial Growth and Royalties

The report revealed substantial financial growth for Indian artists on Spotify. Since 2022, the number of artists earning over INR 50 lakh in royalties has more than doubled. Similarly, those generating over INR 1 crore have tripled, and artists earning over INR 5 crore have doubled. Notably, approximately two-thirds of the royalties generated in India in 2024 were attributed to local artists, reflecting a robust and supportive ecosystem for homegrown talent.

Dominance in Local Playlists

Indian artists showcased their dominance on Spotify India's daily top 50 playlist, with over 90% of the tracks in 2024 attributed to them—a 6% increase from 2023. This trend highlights the strong connection between local audiences and their native musicians.

Global Reach and International Listenership

The global reach of Indian music has expanded notably. Nearly 50% of all royalties generated by Indian artists on Spotify in 2024 came from listeners outside India, up from 40% in 2023. Countries such as the USA, UK, UAE, Pakistan, Canada, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka have emerged as significant markets for Indian music, illustrating its widespread international appeal.

Diversity in Languages and Genres

The diversity of languages and genres has been pivotal in this growth. Royalties from artists performing in Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu have each more than doubled since 2021. Notably, Telugu music experienced a 39% increase in global royalties in 2024, making it one of the fastest-growing languages on the platform. Popular genres include Hindi pop, Hindi hip hop, Punjabi hip hop, Hindi indie, Malayalam hip hop, Punjabi pop, and Tamil pop, reflecting the rich tapestry of India's music scene.

Prominent Artists Leading the Charge

Several Indian artists have been instrumental in this global growth. Figures such as Arijit Singh, Shreya Ghoshal, Pritam, Anirudh Ravichander, Diljit Dosanjh, Karan Aujla, Hanumankind, Kalmi, A.R. Rahman, Sidhu Moose Wala, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Vishal-Shekhar, AP Dhillon, Badshah, and Alka Yagnik have not only dominated local charts but have also garnered significant international listenership, further elevating the global profile of Indian music.

Spotify's Contribution to the Artist Economy

Spotify's initiatives have played a crucial role in this upward trajectory. Through artist education programs, emerging artist support, and on-ground experiences, the platform has fostered deeper connections between artists and fans. In 2024, over 9,000 Indian artists were added to global and local editorial playlists, up from 8,700 in the previous year, providing them with greater visibility and opportunities for discovery.

Global Payouts and Industry Impact

On a global scale, Spotify continues to lead in music industry payouts, distributing more than $10 billion in music royalties in 2024 alone. This represents a tenfold increase over the past decade, with total payouts since the platform's inception reaching around $60 billion. This financial commitment underscores Spotify's role in supporting artists worldwide and fueling the growth of the music industry.

In summary, 2024 was a landmark year for Indian artists on Spotify, characterized by increased discoveries, substantial financial growth, and an expanding global audience. The platform's support and the artists' diverse offerings have collectively propelled Indian music to new heights, both domestically and internationally.
